Marlborough Sounds

The Marlborough Sounds at the top of the south island, New Zealand, are made up of a number of intricate waterways and represent 20% of New Zealand’s coastline.

From a scientific view they were formed in ancient times when the valleys sunk allowing the Pacific Ocean to flow in. Maori legend speaks of them being created when a maori warrior named Kupe chased a giant octopus and the ensuing battle formed the waterways and peninsulas of the sounds.

The Queen Charlotte Sound is the most well known of the four sounds that make up the Marlborough Sounds and has a long historic heritage with pre European settlements of maori and then as a regular place for Captain Cook to visit during his explorations. It is home to the Queen Charlotte Track, the Outer Queen Charlotte Track, the private walking tracks of Cape Jackson peninsula and a number of Department of Conservation administered sanctuaries both island and marine.

We are very privileged to be able to provide a magnificent opportunity to visit some of these outer sound areas with a variety of different tour packages.
